Today's police, working under the rule of law, citizen-friendly and transparently, needs to face its own history unflinchingly. With the Police Museum of Lower Saxony, we as the basic and further training establishment for the police in our State, we are contributing to our responsibilities in giving future colleagues a professional understanding of themselves which has been changing constantly in past decades and has not finished changing yet.

Our own education is not the only thing we are interested in, though, but also communicating and sharing knowledge and information with the rest of society. Our exhibition aims to encourage members of the public who are interested to discuss with us.

What started in modest premises as a travelling exhibition working out of premises on the Herschelstrasse and Tannenbergallee in Hanover continued in one of the halls at the former Telefunken works in Hanover from May 2001 to May 2011, with impressive exhibits, explanatory displays and images showing how the police has changed from the Middle Ages through to today's police as service providers.

The Museum in Nienburg opened its doors in November 2011, on two floors, inviting citizens both large and small to come and wonder at the old and new. Extraordinary vehicles, major criminal cases, insights into working at the scene of the crime and a historical tour provide insights into how the Police of Lower Saxony have developed over time.

Dealing with social science aspects and political events in connection with how the police thinks and acts regularly raises new issues in research: so there is also space for academics in our ranks, and we see it as a challenge to respond to academic interest in the police as a an institution. With this in mind, we provide literature, written documents, images and films from the Museum's police history collection.

The collection continues to be supported, both financially and practically, by the Friends of the police history collection of Lower Saxony e.V.
